New Bookshop opens in York
A new bookshop in the centre of York, situated between the Minster and the Shrine of St Margaret Clitherow on the Shambles, was officially opened by the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough, the Rt Revd Terence Drainey, on 11th September. The shop, located on King's Square, is the fifth in the chain of St Pauls shops around the country, making this the largest chain of Catholic bookshops in the UK.
The opening ceremony began with a procession of the Bishop and members of the Society of St Paul from the Shrine of St Margaret Clitherow to King's Square, where the awaiting crowd had been entertained by the a cappella singers Umdumo Wesizwe (Sound of the Nation) an ensemble of young men originally from Zimbabwe. A large number of priests and people from the diocese of Middlesbrough and the Anglican archdiocese of York attended the opening ceremony, together with representatives of many Christian publishers.
The bookshop, covering over 2000 sq ft of floor space, will sell a full range of Christian books, cards, gifts, church furnishings and second-hand books.
Stephen Moseling, Operations Co-ordinator of St Pauls said: "We feel blessed to have the support of so many people from within and outside the Christian book trade as we begin this new venture in York. Our aim is to be of service to Christians from all denominations and to be a witness to the Gospel to the thousands of tourists who visit the historic city of York every year."
