Good News for Cardiff
On Saturday 6th September, Churches Together Bookshop in Cardiff officially opened with a service of dedication held in the shop lead by the Rev. Tom Arthur, minister at the U.R.C. City church.
The Churches Together Bookshop, in Windsor Place Cardiff, is a joint enterprise by church leaders concerned about the loss of the former SPCK bookshop – which had served Christians in the city for more than 30 years. The bookshop was closed earlier this year by the owners of St Stephen the Great (SSG) who took over the SPCK Bookshop business in 2006.
Although this was the official opening, the shop has been trading since July 22nd 2008. Ruth Dickinson and Terry Cox, who co-manage the shop, say they have been overwhelmed by the positive support they have received from both clergy and members of the general public. “The feel good factor is certainly present at the shop and the confidence generated by the customers, knowing that orders can now be filled, is growing daily,” said Ruth Dickinson.
The service of dedication was attended by representatives from the U.R.C. Church, the U.R.C. Synod, the governing body of the Church in Wales, Methodist ministers and the principle of St. Michaels' Theological College, Llandaff, plus members of various congregations throughout the city.
Over forty people attended the service including suppliers representatives. Suppliers who were unable to attend passed on their best wishes and support for the future of the bookshop.
Ruth Dickinson commented, “The support that we have received means that the stock within the shop is truly ecumenical and appeals to a far wider range of customers. We look forward to supplying a service to the local area and beyond for many years to come.
